MIAMI. — The General Customs of the Republic of Cuba (AGR, by its Spanish acronym) reported recent operations in which counterfeit dollars, gold bars, and psychotropic substances were confiscated. These actions are part of the government’s intensified campaign against drug trafficking, in a context where the problem has gained greater visibility on the Island.

First Deputy Chief of the AGR, William Pérez González, revealed on the social media platform X the detection of $30,000 in counterfeit bills at Varadero International Airport. However, the bills in question were prop money, used for cinematic purposes and clearly marked with the phrase “For motion picture purposes.” Nevertheless, Pérez González stated that the case was reported for criminal prosecution.

New Methods of Drug Use and Gold Smuggling
At the same time, customs authorities warned about the introduction of a new method of drug consumption on the Island, consisting of sublingual strips containing THC, the main psychoactive component of marijuana.

In addition, at Havana International Airport, Customs agents discovered two kilograms of gold in bar form hidden in the false bottom of a suitcase. “The case was reported, and those responsible will face criminal charges. The sharpness and training of our officers continue to be a strength,” said Pérez González.

A Problem That Can No Longer Be Hidden
The rise in drug trafficking in Cuba, especially in Havana, has forced the government to adopt a hardline strategy, with high-profile trials and sentences of up to 30 years in prison.

In the neighborhoods of El Chorro and El Palenque (in the municipalities of Marianao and La Lisa), police arrested several drug traffickers last week. At the same time, Canal Habana reported that a “preventive” meeting was held in those same neighborhoods, where young people undergoing rehabilitation shared their experiences with addiction. During the event, prosecutors reiterated the government’s intention to impose harsher punishments as the main measure to curb drug trafficking.

These actions are part of the Second National Exercise for the Prevention and Confrontation of Crime, Illegal Activities, and Social Indiscipline, which began on  Monday, March 24.

Currently, one of the most commonly used drugs in Cuba is known as “el químico” (the chemical). Its artisanal production makes it inexpensive, and because it’s so cheap, it’s the perfect business for dealers—it generates high demand at an unbeatable price: between 150 and 200 pesos per dose, while a pound of sugar costs over 300 pesos. Since the effects are short-lived, customers keep coming back for more.
