AREQUIPA, Peru The Mexican political party Morena signed an agreement this past weekend with the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC, by its Spanish acronym) intended, in the words of its Secretary General Carolina Rangel Gracida, to “strengthen cooperation” between the two organizations.

According to a statement posted by Morena on X (formerly Twitter), Rangel Gracida made an official visit to the Island and participated in the May 1st Workers’ Day parade in Havana, organized by the Castro dictatorship.

The Secretary General also held a meeting with Cuban dictator Miguel Díaz-Canel, during which the agreement between the two parties was signed. The stated aim of the agreement is to “strengthen cooperation and political exchange between both progressive forces.”

Rangel Gracida later met with the president of the Cuban Institute for Friendship with Peoples (ICAP, by its Spanish acronym) and with representatives from the PCC’s Department of International Relations.

“With this visit, Morena continues to strengthen its international ties, advancing its consolidation as the most important leftist party-movement in Latin America,” the statement concludes.

Although further details of the agreement have yet to be disclosed, the move has once again exposed Morena to criticism from its opponents in Mexico. For years, the ruling party has dismissed accusations that it harbors communist sympathies.

The ruling Morena (which stands for National Regeneration Movement) is a left-wing party founded in October 2011 by former Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who during his administration was one of the Castro regime’s main political allies in the region.

Morena currently governs the majority of Mexican states and serves as the political base of current president, Claudia Sheinbaum.

Like her predecessor, Sheinbaum has maintained a close relationship with the Cuban regime. Last December, the president declared that the dictatorships in Cuba and Venezuela are “progressive governments,” despite the political and economic crises those countries face, along with a context marked by repression and human rights violations.

According to Sheinbaum, Mexico shares “many things in common” with those “progressive” governments. Since taking office, she has also continued the practice of hiring Cuban doctors, which the Castro regime exports as a source of income.
