The Cuban and Iranian regimes have maintained relations for decades based on the need for mutual support in the face of international condemnation.

AREQUIPA, Peru – Cuban ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel, an ally of the ayatollahs’ regime, on Sunday rejected the United States’ attack on three nuclear facilities in Iran.

“We strongly condemn the U.S. bombings of nuclear facilities in Iran, which represent a dangerous escalation of conflict in the Middle East,” wrote the Cuban dictator on X (formerly Twitter).

“The aggression is a serious violation of the UN Charter and International Law and drags humanity into a crisis with irreversible consequences,” he added.

According to an announcement made this Saturday by U.S. President Donald Trump, the U.S. military “successfully” attacked three nuclear facilities in Iran, thus putting an end to the debate over possible American involvement in the current Middle East conflict.

The U.S. strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities supports Israel’s offensive to dismantle the Iranian regime’s nuclear program—a conflict that, since June 13, has escalated with attacks and counteroffensives between Tehran and Tel Aviv.

Alongside Díaz-Canel, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla also expressed his support for Iran following Washington’s offensive, calling it “a criminal, irresponsible act in violation of International Law with incalculable consequences” and “an unjust escalation of war.”

In a national address late Saturday, Trump further explained the White House’s stance on the Middle East conflict and possible future actions.

“Tonight, I can report to the world that the attacks have been a spectacular military success. Iran’s main nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and totally destroyed. Iran, the bully of the Middle East, must now make peace. If it does not, future strikes will be far greater and far easier,” the president stated.

Cuba-Iran Relations

At first glance, Havana and Iran may seem to represent very different political models—one communist and secular, the other an Islamic theocracy—but both regimes have cultivated a close relationship based on shared strategic interests. Over decades, they have maintained cooperation that goes beyond economics, grounded in the need for mutual support in the face of international condemnation.

Since 1979, Iran has granted Cuba millions in credit, such as a €200 million loan in 2008, which the island has repaid with services and cooperation in sectors like healthcare, transportation, biotechnology, agriculture, and intelligence.

But beyond economic agreements, the bond between the two countries is rooted in political and ideological alignment: both share an authoritarian model of control over society and information, and they maintain similar positions in international forums, opposing the Western liberal order. In this sense, their relationship also serves as a diplomatic shield against sanctions, human rights condemnation, and marginalization on the global stage.
